Indianapolis – On January 13, 2009, the Indiana Ready Mix Association (IRMCA) presented Bowen Engineering with the Outstanding Concrete Achievement Award for work completed in the construction of the FGD Holding Basins at the Hoosier Energy Merom Generating Station in Sullivan, IN. Bowen Engineering’s Doug Bowen, Josh Kellam and Mike McBroom were there to accept this prestigious award, along with IMI’s George Gremore, who nominated Bowen for the award.

The project scope included the construction of a two million gallon concrete storage basin for the temporary storage and de-watering of wastes prior to treatment in the wastewater treatment system. To complete the project, a total of 4700 CY of concrete was placed by Bowen crews. The basin covers an area of 4.2 acres.

Bowen was selected for this award based on the quality of work exhibited under challenging conditions. Detailed planning and innovative use of materials ensured project success, despite cold weather and heavy precipitation during construction.

The Project Team included:
Aaron Purdue- Operations Manager
Homer Fruit- Project Manager
Jeff Jones – Superintendent
Mike McBroom- Concrete Foreman
Josh Kellam- Project Engineer
Aaron Bezy – Carpenter Foreman
Joe Thomas – Carpenter Foreman
Jerome Young – Laborer Foreman

The Hoosier Energy project is a great example of the power of an aligned Team. The stakeholders including Hoosier Energy, Burns & McDonnell, IMI, unions, craftsmen, subcontractors and suppliers all pulled together to do what was in the best interest of the project, despite the adverse weather conditions throughout the project.

I also want to congratulate the Bowen site leadership team (Jeff Jones, Mike McBroom, Josh Kellam, Joe Thomas and many others) for their exceptional commitment to advance planning to ensure safe, quality and productive work.
